Garland Mill: 170 Years of Water, Wood, and Craft

Garland Mill: 170 Years of Water, Wood and Craft presents a photographic and narrative portrait of the last commercially operating water-powered sawmill in New England. Located in the northern foothills of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Garland Mill continues to operate in a manner that would be instantly recognizable to Eban Garland, who first set its gears in motion in 1856.

Offering a rare window into a living industrial tradition that has nearly vanished from the American landscape, the photographs document the physical character of the sawmill and explore the process of timber milling, from pulling great fallen trees from the mill pond to crafting beautiful and enduring timber frame houses. Included in the book are a series of essays that trace the history of the mill and detail the modern and historic processes of milling and timber framing. Together, these images and essays paint a vivid picture of the values that define Garland Mill: craftsmanship, sustainability, community, and stewardship.
